This 17 day trip retracing part of the route to Mecca of the famous Turkish traveler and scholar, Evliya Celebi, traverses a beautiful part of western Turkey. UNESCO has named 2011 as the year of Celebi commemorating his 400th birthday and this section of the route is promoted also by the Long Riders Guild for its beauty and cultural significance. It is a journey through forests and rich, cultivated fields, over hills, down valleys, past towering mountains, around marshes, across hillsides, and into picturesque villages. It is so well off normal tourist paths that inhabitants of these remote areas find tourists a curiosity and give them a friendly welcome. The trip also includes tours of Istanbul (one of the world’s most beautiful cities) as well as Bursa (ancient capital of the Ottoman Empire and an important point on the old silk route). The dates are 29 August – 14 September and 14-30 September and the price is about $4,000 depending on the number of participants.
