Africa

There is an enticing and diverse choice of rides departing all year in Africa. Mel and Bayard started leading riding tours in Kenya, where Mel was raised, 30 years ago and we have sent over a thousand people to ride there since then. For many it has been the trip of a lifetime, affording fascinating encounters with the abundant wildlife and some thrilling gallops with wildebeest and zebra. That irresistibly enchanting movie, “Out of Africa”, was filmed where our safaris take place. Zebras in Kenya

In Kenya costs of operating are high and only the most experienced and courageous riders should attempt the challenging riding in the Masai Mara, but there are now several alternatives in Kenya and southern Africa more geared toward intermediate riders and more affordable than our pioneering ride. One possibility is the Chyulu Hills in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro where there are excellent horses imported from South Africa and you have the option of comfortable camping or staying in a luxury lodge.

Riding in Botswana’s Okavango Delta has always been a unique experience and we have been working with the same competent outfitter there for over 25 years. Riding in south Africa There is nothing like the thrill of cantering along in two feet of water while lechwe antelope bound along beside you. The drier terrain to the south offers some fine riding with well trained horses and interesting game viewing. You can stay at working ranches in South Africa in breathtaking country full of wildlife with the opportunity of riding across the border between South Africa and Botswana. If you are seeking a real challenge far off the beaten path, try a ride across the austere and beautiful Namibian Desert. Deep river gorges lead down to the wild Atlantic Coast where the ride ends.

One thing is for certain; if you have never been to Africa, taking any of these rides will change and expand your world view.
