Horseback Riding in France

France is ideally suited for a horseback riding vacation. It was here that the idea of equestrian travel was reborn and is most highly developed. Ride leaders in France must take long courses and pass exams on leading riding tours and horsemanship. The countryside in many parts of France is unspoiled and beautiful with many rights-of-way kept open which makes riding through it on horseback a real pleasure. Riding trails in France usually avoid paved roads. Spectacular castles, walled towns and ancient monasteries are everywhere. It is a thrill to ride into a castle courtyard on horseback like a traveler of old. Each region has a unique character with its own history, cuisine, wine, architecture and topography. French food and wine are justly famous and you will have every opportunity to savor them with an appetite made keener by an active day of horseback riding. Accommodations vary from small village hotels to châteaux, but are generally picturesque and comfortable. Some of our French riding vacations use Western saddles which is not so surprising since southern France borders Spain where our own Western riding traditions originated. France is still the most popular country in the world for vacations.

WESTERN RIDING IN FRANCE: The five following riding vacations use Western, English and McClellan-type saddles and are led by a friendly and well informed Frenchman who will give you a warm welcome and a good introduction to the history and culture of these areas.

Castles, Cliffs and Caves - This riding trip traverses a fascinating part of France considered by National Geographic to be one of the world's "unspoiled and undiscovered earthly paradises." Dramatic cliffs, seemingly impregnable forests, medieval villages perched at breathtaking heights, castles, abbeys, troglodyte homes and prehistoric caves; all make you feel as if you have entered a mystical land. The opportunity to do this on horseback is an unparalleled experience.

Fortresses and Forests of Dordogne - This riding vacation in the Dordogne proceeds through the countryside of France you have always imagined. Quaint villages, bastides, and majestic chateaux are scattered throughout the cultured landscape of fields, orchards, vineyards and forests. In a country where cuisine is second only to God, this region stands out for its culinary excellence.

Lords of the Vineyard - There is much history to be seen on this ride, but there is an emphasis on wine for which the region is famous. One is often riding beside vineyards and there are many chances to visit wineries and taste the product.

Secluded Manor Ride - Located in the heart of the Dordogne, Perigord and Quercy regions, the secluded manor house where you will spend the week is the perfect place to get away from it all.

Vineyards and Beaches of Bordeaux - The Gironde region, and its major port – Bordeaux, have a rich and varied cultural heritage, most famously known for its prestigious wine-producing chateaux and some of the world’s best Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The Soul of Provence - Many feel that this part of France is the most beautiful place in the world. Painters like Van Gogh and Cézanne loved to paint here. Picturesque medieval towns and fairy tale castles abound in this lovely setting. It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for horseback vacations.

Unguided Riding - This unguided ride in the foothills of the Pyrenees is a wonderful adventure. The horses are most reliable, the local country people friendly, the food excellent and the organization impeccable. It is wonderful value for the money and we highly recommend it. The whole route is rich in history with many castles and villages which have changed little in centuries. This is the perfect horseback riding tour for experienced riders who are adventurous and resourceful. A New York Times article about it is available on request.

Riding through Quercy - A comparatively slow paced horseback ride in a region of oak forests and truffles which is rich in history. It is near here that many of the magnificent prehistoric cave drawings were found. The famous old monastery of Rocamadour hanging from the side of a cliff is on the riding tour along with other historical gems.

Limousin Trail - In the Middle Ages Limousin was on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Many of the churches on the route still stand in this peaceful, green region of France. Step back in time as you ride through small, quaint villages and forested countryside far from the more touristed areas of France. This is rural France at its best.

STATIONARY RIDING PROGRAM:

Domaine des Garennes - The riding center is surrounded by oak forests with many roads and trails ideal for riding. It also has excellent food, warm hospitality, tennis courts and a swimming pool. Fascinating historical places are nearby. It is a fine destination for less experienced riders who want to see something of France and have other possible activities. It offers a great deal for the price.
