Dude Ranch Riding Vacations
Vacations at dude ranches generally have a bad reputation among equestrians. This is because so many dude ranches in states like Wyoming, Montana, Colorado and Arizona have become resorts where a dude can wear a western hat, take hay rides and sing western songs by the camp fire. In fact this perception is often correct, but there are some strikingly significant exceptions.
The Riding Terrain
At Equitours we know that the Rocky Mountains can be an ideal setting for riding vacations. Many ranches, by no means all, are located where guests can ride for many miles without seeing other people or coming near a paved road. The problems of rights-of-way which hamper riding in much of the world rarely exist. The scenery is often spectacular and untouched by civilization. It is healthy country for horses and they can be kept comparatively cheaply. The climate in summer is superb. In short, the setting is ideal for riding and this is why we have our own ranch in northwest Wyoming.

As the article on Selecting a Riding Program points out in detail, there are many factors to consider in picking the most appropriate place for yourself and your family. One should examine the quality of the horses and the number available for guests. Some ranches depend on horses rented for the summer and keep only one per client. Horses will turn into tired plugs if they are ridden too much week after week and will soon begin to feel that riding out is a distasteful chore so that there is little chance of building a mutually satisfying partnership. The terrain available for riding is vital since some ranches are very restricted as to where they can ride despite a beautiful location. Some only offer rides at a walk or a slow trot while others allow fast paced riding for advanced riders. Safety is a vital consideration and depends on such factors as the appropriate assignment of horses and grouping riders in rides corresponding to their ability. Otherwise the more skilled riders will bored or the less skilled will be terrified. If you have an interest in improving your riding ability, seek a ranch which offers lessons. Another consideration is whether you are interested in an authentic working outfit which raises its own cattle and horses or you want more of a resort situation. Working cattle with a willing horse as a partner can add another dimension to riding, but it is not for everyone.
