Mexico is the land of Aztecs and Conquistadores with a rich cultural and historical heritage. It is easy to reach, has beautiful unspoiled countryside and the winter climate is delightful making it a prime destination for a horseback riding vacation. Surprisingly we had a hard time and searched for years before finding a place which we felt met the standards Equitours clients have learned to expect. We are therefore especially pleased to have discovered the Sierra Cavalcade which can be favorably compared with European trips from the point of view of horses, tack, food and accommodations. The Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds are excellent and nothing like the smaller horses one usually finds in Mexico and the rest of Central America.
The tour is well planned to circle the lake of Valle de Bravo gleaming like a jewel and to provide stunning views as one rides high in the mountains through magnificent forests and grassy clearings. During the season, the ride includes a visit to one of the remote breeding grounds of the monarch butterflies which winter here in incredible profusion. The horses can approach within a few hundred yards of the site which is otherwise very difficult to reach and has few visitors. The picturesque colonial town of Valle de Bravo with its many shops is also an attraction. Guests stay in the lovely home of your hosts, Lucia and Pepe, which is beautifully decorated and surrounded by attractive gardens. You are welcome to browse through the fascinating library of Lucia and Pepe and you will find them a mine of information about local history, flora and fauna. The margaritas served in the evening after a day in the saddle are truly delicious. The whole operation is run with European efficiency without losing the charming Mexican flavor.
"The Mexico "endurance" ride was splendid. Remember crossing paths with the competition that day at the top of the mountain? It certainly was a vivid snapshot of one of the many incredible differences between Equitours and them. Can you image? A bologna sandwich in a Styrofoam container compared to the superbly prepared, traditional Mexican meals Pepe prepared for us every day. I think we're spoiled!
