Horseback Riding in Kenya

Mel and Bayard Fox began riding in the Masai Mara in 1979, taking summer ranch guests with them to Kenya in the winter. In the early years they guided the trips themselves and have been back many times. Mel was raised in East Africa, speaks fluent Swahili and is very familiar with the flora and fauna.

Kenya was the first Equitours ride overseas and remains a great favorite. Our horseback riding safaris in Kenya are without a doubt the most exciting and adventuresome of all our rides. Strong riders, confident at all paces on broken terrain riding athletic horses will be in their element here. The opportunity to see big game and interact with wild animals on splendid horses is thrilling. Sometimes in the Masai Mara huge herds of wildebeest and zebra extend as far as the eye can see. The opportunity to see native tribesmen whose culture is dramatically different from ours in remote areas unspoiled by frequent tourist visits never fails to fascinate.

The mobile camps on all these safaris are surprisingly comfortable. The two person tents are spacious and the beds have sheets and blankets. The fresh food is well prepared and the service is excellent. Hot showers are available every evening.

RIDNG/WILDLIFE SAFARIS: We also offer custom wildlife safaris with 4 destinations in Kenya, suitable for riders and non-riders.
Kenya Wildlife Safaris

Kenya - AMBOSELI SAFARI - This mobile safari traverses the vast and varied terrain of Amboseli National Park, just beneath the towering snow capped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Ride across the savannahs, through the mist forest, and into the Chyulu Mountain Range, which supplies water to the rolling grasslands that are home to an array of wildlife. Visitors have the opportunity to gallop across Amboselli's dry lake beds, take a walking safari from Longeriti Camp, enjoy a game drive through the stunning landscape at sunset, and take pictures of eland, kudu, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, giraffe, elephant, and even cheetah.

Kenya - CHYULU HILLS SAFARI - A classic point-to-point safari with all the romance and adventure of mobile camps. The route takes you through a variety of ecosystems, from lush forests at the tops of the hills, to the wide open, acacia-dotted savannah. Some departures include Amboseli National Park, situated on an old soda lake near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is famous for its elephant herds as well as numerous species of plains game.

Kenya - LAIKIPIA SAFARI - The Laikipia rides around the snow capped peak of Mt. Kenya traverses several large ranches (up to 100,000 acres) which were carved out of the wilderness a century ago by white settlers. The wild game has been well preserved on these huge ranches although there are sometimes difficult interactions between game and cattle.

Kenya - MASAI MARA SAFARI - The quintessential African adventure is riding a fast horse across the vast plains of the Masai Mara, amid herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. This remarkable point-to-point safari is suitable for strong, gutsy riders who appreciate a challenge. Nights are spent in comfortable safari camps far removed from the outside world. Then fly to an estate in the Rift Valley for the final two nights.

Kenya - SOSIAN RANCH - Sosian Ranch is located on a vast expanse of wilderness in the heart of Kenya’s highlands and is home to a huge diversity of mammals and birds. The ranch house was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans, and in recent years was beautifully restored to accommodate up to 14 people in the atmosphere of a private home. Seven cottages lie in the tropical garden overlooking Mt Kenya and miles of unspoiled Africa, each with its own private verandah and ensuite bathroom. The spacious lodge has a swimming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable garden. Sosian lies at an altitude of nearly 6000 feet and has no record of malaria making it attractive for everyone, especially families.
