Horseback Riding in Chile
The region around the huge Torres del Paine National Park in Chile is certainly one of the world’s most scenic and beautiful areas. The impressive mountain chain rises abruptly from sea level to near 10,000 ft. and is at least as spectacular as the famous Tetons towering above Jackson Hole. UNESCO has rightly named this area as a World Biosphere Reserve because of its unique natural features. It is located near the extreme southern tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego which Magellan first traversed with such tribulations in 1520. Darwin and many other travelers of note were fascinated by this region.
Visiting this beautiful area on horseback is certainly an adventure you will not soon forget. The beauty of this area and its unique natural features rival US national parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite. Due to its extremely remote location it is not overrun with tourists like most of the world’s best known attractive places. There are ideal places for fast gallops and the horses are pleased to oblige. Riders can either camp or stay in haciendas (ranches).
The wildlife includes rhea and guanaco and there is excellent trout fishing in the rivers. Some of the flora is unique to this part of the world and parts of the forests have remained virgin. Great chunks of glacier (which are receding rapidly) fall from time to time into the azure lakes. A tour through southern Patagonia is an exciting equestrian experience which many of our clients have found extremely worthwhile.
