Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America (it used to be British Honduras) and it is an ideal destination for American travelers. Its glorious beaches are well known, but the hill country in the interior is an excellent place for horseback riding. The scenery is lovely, the magnificent bird life is abundant and fascinating Mayan ruins are everywhere.
The Belize airport is only a two-hour flight from the southern United States and yet it is like entering a world as different as Africa. It is the home of rare and beautiful birds, gorgeous wild orchids and huge butterflies. It is not just the natural beauty of the land which makes this ride so special; it is the abundant traces of Mayan civilization which you will see during the course of your ride.
You have the option to extend your ride by two additional days to include a trip to the excavated Mayan ruins at Tikal.
Riding out from the dense canopy into the open valley of the Vega, wild parrots chattering in the trees, loose horses grazing in the grass that covered their knees – cantering through there was just magnificent - made me feel glad to be alive and privileged to be on horseback. - Deborah Ann Huba
Belize - MAYAN JUNGLE RIDE - The 6-day itinerary is wonderfully relaxing and, in addition to riding every day, it includes such diverse activities as swimming, canoeing and exploring limestone caverns.
