Horseback Riding in Portugal COSTA AZUL RIDE |
The southwest of Portugal is ideally suited to a riding tour and the climate remains exceptionally temperate all year. This is one of the least populated parts of Europe and has been protected by law from the unbridled development which has taken place on so much of the coast. The routes have been chosen from the 1,000 miles of firm, sandy tracks to give the widest variety of landscape and the most opportunity for trots and canters. The rides traverse oak and pine forests, cross golden plains ablaze with wildflowers and skirt the spectacular Atlantic Coast.
Wildlife abounds with over 200 species of birds, and hundreds of plant species. The landscape has changed little over the centuries since the Romans and Moors settled here. The towns and villages are connected by ancient sand tracks which are used daily by ox and mule drawn carts, donkeys and horses. Trails on the ride are selected from the miles of traditional tracks to offer the best variety of landscapes as well as opportunities for extended trots and canters.
