NAGAUR FAIR RIDE

The Pushkar and Nagaur rides include visits to local fairs. The Nagaur Fair is smaller, less touristy and without the Brahma festivities of the
Pushkar Fair. Both are great colorful and historical events of India. For untold centuries tribesmen have met to trade camels, cattle and horses. Of late years there have been some 200,000 people and 50,000 animals at the Pushkar Camel Fair.

This trip was a huge pleasure and a rare opportunity, which I hope I'll have an opportunity to promote, and I certainly plan to do again in '09. Thank you.
- Londa Weisman - Nagaur Fair Ride 2007

Itinerary
Day 1:Arrive in Delhi where you will be picked up at the airport and taken to the Hotel Imperial or similar. Rooms will be available after 12:00 noon. If arriving late night of the day before, or early morning on this day, additional accommodations can be arranged by the outfitter (at riders own expense).
Day 2:The day is free to visit Delhi and rest. In the evening board the overnight sleeper train for Bikaner.
Day 3:Arrive in Bikaner in the morning, staying in the lovely Laxmi Niwas Hotel, where you can visit the museum and the old town.
Day 4:After breakfast, drive to Gajner – about 40 minutes drive from Bikaner and transfer to Gajner Palace Hotel which is now a beautiful hotel by the edge of a lake, and where you spend the night, and also meet your horses.
After lunch, try out the horses by riding in an around Gajner.
Day 5:In the morning ride out about 35 kms. toward a village named Jai Singh in the Thar Desert near the border of Pakistan. Trees and grass are sparse. In some places the wind and shifting sands have created spectacular sand dunes which tower above the plain. Despite the austerity of the land a surprising number of people have learned to eek out a living here. En-route you will pass several small villages. Night in camp.
Day 6:Ride about 35 kms to Dohara Farm. The ride on this day takes you across several farms and huge sand dunes. Arrive at Dohara camp near a large sand dune for night in camp.
Day 7:Ride about 30 kms to Tantwas village and make another camp in the desert. While riding through this area you see several Chinkara gazelles and if lucky, you might also come across the Desert Fox. Overnight in camp.
Day 8:Ride to Khari village - about 35 kms - through several villages, farmlands and sand dunes. As you get closer to the village, you may see a lot of Chinkara Gazelles grazing or jumping all around the area. Today you will get a chance to climb up on a very large sand dune with a temple on top of it and from where you get a lovely view of the desert around this place. Night at camp.
Day 9:Ride for about 30 kms. To Nagaur. The ride takes you across several farm lands and villages. There will be a chance to climb up on one of the largest sand dunes of this area where there is a small temple at the top of the dune and you have a lovely view of the entire area. Arrive at Nagaur where the fair will be full of camels and many other animals. Overnight in camp, which will be set up away from the town and close to the fair.
Day 10:Spend the day in Nagaur visiting the fair on horseback and on foot. There are about 25,000 camels on display as well as a number of horses and cattle. People come from hundreds of miles away to buy and sell, and it is an excellent chance to see the ways of ancient India. There are many shops selling handicrafts, cloth, jewelry, etc. Few tourists visit this fair, as it is little known abroad and is mainly for the local people. Overnight in camp.
Day 11:After breakfast, say good-bye to your horses and the camp staff and drive to Khimsar (about 1 hr.) Arrive Khimsar and transfer to Khimsar Fort hotel where you spend the night in great luxury. Khimsar is quite a large desert village with a magnificent castle built near an oasis centuries ago. It has been beautifully restored and converted into a splendid hotel with all the luxuries of steam bath and sauna, the traditional Ayurvedic massage and a lovely swimming pool – all of which are going to be very welcome after the ride in the desert.
Day 12:After breakfast, drive to Jaisalmer (about 4 to 5 hrs drive) and transfer to Hotel Fort Rajwada – which is considered one of the best hotels in Jaisalmer. In the afternoon visit Jaisalmer which has the reputation of being one of the most picturesque walled towns in the world.
